What is an AI SDR?

A plain-English explainer for sales teams. Updated October 2026.

An AI SDR is software that does the first part of a sales development rep's job on the phone: it calls a list of leads, talks with whoever picks up, asks a few qualifying questions, leaves a voicemail when nobody answers, and hands the interested people to a human. The AI part is a voice agent that listens and answers in real time, so the call sounds like a conversation, not a recording.

What it does well

  • Speed to lead. It can call a new web lead minutes after the form comes in, inside your calling hours, while the person still remembers asking.
  • The repetitive part. Dialing, ringing out, voicemail after voicemail. A rep might spend hours a day on this. The agent doesn't mind.
  • Consistency. It asks the same qualifying questions on every call and writes the answers into a summary and transcript.
  • Follow-through. It calls again on the schedule you set, so leads don't go quiet because someone forgot.

What it doesn't do

  • Close complicated deals. Pricing negotiations, multi-person decisions and anything that needs judgment belong with a person.
  • Make up for a bad list. If people didn't ask to hear from you, an AI calling them is worse, not better, and in the US it's usually illegal.
  • Know what you haven't told it. It only knows your product, offers and policies as well as the instructions you give it.

Honesty and consent come first

A good AI SDR says it's an AI at the start of the call and whenever someone asks, never pretends to be a person, and stops for good the moment someone says not to call again. In the US, AI-voice calls generally need prior express written consent from the person you're calling, to your business. Keep where and when each lead agreed, and call inside sensible local hours. How DialSwarm handles compliance.

How to evaluate one

  1. Call yourself first. Push back like a tough prospect. Does it stay on track, admit what it doesn't know, and handle "not interested" politely?
  2. Check the guardrails. AI disclosure, do-not-call handling, calling hours in the prospect's time zone, and a record of each call you could show a lawyer.
  3. Look at the hand-off. Can it transfer a live call to a rep, and does every call end with a clear next step?
  4. Can a manager step in? Listening to live calls and correcting the agent mid-call shortens the learning curve a lot.
  5. Run a small pilot. 50 to 100 leads, read the transcripts, then decide. Work out the cost per conversation with your own numbers.

Questions people ask

Is it legal to call people with an AI voice?

In the US, calls that use an artificial or AI-generated voice need the person's prior express written consent under the TCPA, and many states add their own rules on hours and recording. Call only people who agreed to hear from your business, keep that record, and honor stop requests right away. This isn't legal advice; check with your lawyer for your situation.

Will people hang up when they hear it's an AI?

Some will. Saying so up front is the honest way to do it, and the people who stay on the line know what they're talking to. Short, useful calls to people who asked to hear from you go best.

Does an AI SDR replace my reps?

It replaces the dialing, not the selling. It works the list, leaves voicemails and qualifies, then hands the interested people to a person.

How do I know if it's working?

Run a small list first, read the transcripts, and compare the cost per conversation and the meetings booked against your reps on the same kind of leads.
