Talk Time
Talk time is the amount of time spent in live conversation on calls, measured per call or as a total for a rep, agent, or campaign.
Talk time leaves out ringing, hold, and after-call work. It is just the time people are actually talking.
How teams use it:
- As a sign of engagement. Longer calls often mean real conversations, though not always good ones.
- To plan staffing and estimate how many calls a rep can handle.
- To estimate costs when a tool charges by the minute.
Related metrics:
- Average talk time: total talk time divided by connected calls.
- Average handle time: talk time plus hold time plus after-call work.
- Talk-to-listen ratio: how much the rep talks compared with the prospect.
Cautions:
- High talk time is not a goal by itself. A two-minute call that books a meeting beats a twenty-minute call that goes nowhere.
- Reps can game talk time by staying on calls longer.
- For AI agents, longer calls can mean higher per-minute costs without better results.
Use talk time alongside outcomes like meetings booked or transfers made. Listen to the longest and shortest calls each week to learn what is happening. Pricing models matter too: per-minute pricing ties cost to talk time, while per-connected-call pricing does not.
